● Exploring the establishment of IIC Kenya Branch Office and R&BD Collaboration
Incheon Innovation Cluster (IIC), led by Prof. Heekwan Lee of Incheon National University, hosted a delegation from Kenyan State Department for Science, Research and Innovation on June 1 at Incheon National University to discuss opportunities for bilateral cooperation in science, technology, and innovation.
The Kenyan delegation was led by Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, and included Mr. Joseph Busiega, Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, and Amb. David Karanja, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Seoul.
During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in environmental, climate, and energy technologies, including opportunities for joint research, technology exchange, and human capacity development.
IIC introduced its global cooperation network and overseas branch model, while discussions focused on potential collaboration in environmental technologies, climate solutions, and innovation-driven research initiatives.
A key topic was the establishment of IIC Kenya Branch Office. Both sides agreed to jointly identify a suitable Kenyan university or research institution to serve as the host for the branch and support long-term bilateral collaboration.
IIC also introduced IIC CONFEX 2026, scheduled for September, and shared its vision for expanding global partnerships in environmental technology and innovation. The Kenyan delegation expressed strong interest in fostering future cooperation among governments, universities, and research institutions, as well as participating in the upcoming event.
This visit marks an important step toward expanding IIC’s international cooperation network into Africa and strengthening science and technology collaboration between Korea and Kenya.
“Kenya is an important partner and a growing hub for science, technology, and innovation in East Africa,” said Prof. Heekwan Lee, Director of Incheon Innovation Cluster. “We look forward to expanding joint research, technology exchange, and human capacity development initiatives, while building a sustainable framework for long-term cooperation through the establishment of an IIC Kenya Branch Office.”
